IT Service Management

ITIL 4 Foundation

The vocabulary every IT service organisation runs on — and the fastest credential to hold.

ITIL is not a technology — it is the shared language IT service organisations use to describe how work flows. That is exactly why it appears in so many job descriptions: a person who understands incident, problem and change management can be useful in an IT team from their first week. It is also the shortest, cheapest credential on this page.

Syllabus

5 modules across 4 weeks, at about 4 hrs/week.

Service management as a discipline

What a service actually is, value co-creation, and the difference between outputs and outcomes — the framing the whole exam rests on.

The four dimensions and the service value system

Organisations and people, information and technology, partners and suppliers, value streams and processes — and how the SVS ties them together.

The seven guiding principles

Focus on value, start where you are, progress iteratively, collaborate, think holistically, keep it simple, optimise and automate — with real examples of each being violated.

The service value chain and key practices

Plan, improve, engage, design and transition, obtain and build, deliver and support — plus incident, problem, change enablement, service request and service desk practices in detail.

Exam preparation

Question patterns, common traps, and two full timed mock exams with review of every wrong answer.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain the difference between incident, problem and change
  • Describe the service value system and the four dimensions

ITIL 4 Foundation — questions

Do I need an IT background for ITIL 4 Foundation?

No, and that is unusual for an IT certification. ITIL Foundation is about how service work is organised, not about technology. People from operations, support and even non-IT backgrounds complete it successfully and use it to move into IT service roles.

Is the ITIL exam fee included in the course fee?

No. The ITIL 4 Foundation exam is administered by PeopleCert and paid directly to them. We prepare you thoroughly and run timed mocks, but the exam voucher is a separate cost.

How hard is the ITIL 4 Foundation exam?

It is a 40-question multiple choice exam with a 65% pass mark and no prerequisites. It is one of the more approachable IT certifications — the difficulty is in precise terminology rather than technical depth, which is exactly what the mock exams train.

Is ITIL still relevant?

Yes, and particularly in India, where a very large share of IT employment is in service delivery and managed services. ITIL 4 explicitly incorporates agile and DevOps ways of working, so it is no longer the rigid process framework its older reputation suggests.
